Gold Chain Length Guide

Where 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 inch chains sit, how width and pendants change the look, layering, and how to measure for the right length.

How chain length is measured

Chain length is the full length of the chain from end to end, including the clasp, laid flat. It is listed in inches. Width, in millimeters, is how thick the links are. Together they decide how a chain looks and where it sits.

Where a chain sits also depends on the wearer's neck and build: the same 18-inch chain sits higher on a larger neck and lower on a slimmer one. The lengths below describe a typical adult.

Common lengths and where they sit

14 inches sits close around the base of the neck like a choker, and is a common length for children. 16 inches sits at the base of the neck or on the collarbone. 18 inches falls just below the collarbone and is the most common length for a pendant.

20 inches falls a few inches below the collarbone, and 22 to 24 inches reaches the upper chest; those are the most popular lengths for men's chains. 30 inches and longer reaches the chest or below and can be doubled for layering.

Measure before you order

The easiest way to choose is to measure a chain you already like: lay it flat and measure end to end. If you do not have one, drape a piece of string around your neck, let it fall where you want the chain to sit, and measure the string.

For a close men's chain, measure around the neck and add about two to four inches. Remember that a pendant adds its own drop below the chain, so the pendant will sit lower than the chain alone.

Width changes the look

Width matters as much as length. Chains around 1 mm are delicate and suit small pendants. 2 to 3 mm is the everyday range, visible on its own and strong enough for most pendants. 4 to 5 mm is a bold chain worn alone, and 6 mm and up is a statement, most often in curb, Cuban, rope, and figaro styles.

A 2 mm chain and a 6 mm chain at the same 20 inches look completely different. Choose width for the look, then length for where it sits. Styles are compared in gold chain styles.

Pendants and chains

A pendant needs a chain that passes through its bail, the loop at the top, and a clasp small enough to thread through it. Heavier pendants need a sturdier chain: a fine 1 mm chain suits a small pendant, while a large cross or medallion is better on 2 to 3 mm.

Some pendants are sold with a chain and some without; each product page says which. If yours has no chain, choose one from Gold Chains in a matching metal.

Adjustable and per-inch chains

Some chains are adjustable, with a slide or extra rings near the clasp, so they can be worn at two lengths, such as 16 and 18 inches. Those are listed with both lengths on the product page.

A few chains are sold by the inch, with the length chosen as an option. Each chain's page lists the lengths and clasps available, and each length is its own option with its own price.

Layering

For a layered look, space chains about two inches apart, such as 16, 18, and 20 inches, so each has its own space and they tangle less. Mix one textured chain, like a rope or paperclip, with one fine chain, and keep the metal color the same to hold the layers together.

Paperclip and fine cable chains are the easiest to layer. Browse paperclip chains, rope chains, and yellow gold chains.

Lengths for men

Most men wear 20 to 24 inches, with 22 inches a common default, so the chain sits on the upper chest and clears a collar. Wider chains, 4 mm and up, suit a broader build; a 2 to 3 mm chain is a clean choice for a pendant or for wearing under a shirt.

Curb, figaro, rope, and Cuban are the classic men's styles. See the men's fine jewelry guide and browse curb chains and figaro chains.

Common questions

What is the most popular necklace length? For women's pendants, 18 inches is the most common length, because it sits at the collarbone on most people. For men, 20 to 22 inches is the usual starting point.

How long should a chain be for a pendant? 18 inches suits most small and medium pendants. Choose 20 inches for a larger pendant, a longer neck, or a pendant you want to sit lower, and 16 inches for a pendant you want close to the throat.

Does the listed length include the clasp? Yes. Chain length is measured end to end with the clasp included, which is the jewelry industry convention.

Can a chain be shortened? A jeweler can shorten most solid chains by removing links and reattaching the clasp. Altered chains can no longer be returned, so choose the length you want before ordering if you can.

What length is best for layering? Space the chains about 2 inches apart, such as 16, 18, and 20 inches, and vary the chain styles so each one stays visible. Every chain in gold chains lists the lengths it comes in on its product page.

Will a chain sit where it does on the model? Not always. Where a chain falls depends on neck size, shoulders, and build, so the same 18 inch chain can sit at the collarbone on one person and higher on another. Measuring a necklace you already own is the most reliable guide.

What length suits a child? 14 to 16 inches is typical for young children, and 16 inches for older children and teenagers. Choose a secure clasp and a fine, light chain, and take it off for sleep and play.
