Tungsten vs Gold Wedding Bands
Tungsten carbide resists scratches and costs less; gold can be resized, repaired, and lasts generations. How the two compare for a wedding band.
Two different materials
Gold bands are a precious-metal alloy, usually 10K, 14K, or 18K. Tungsten bands are made of tungsten carbide, a very hard ceramic-like compound of tungsten and carbon held together with a small amount of binder metal.
Tungsten carbide rates about 8.5 to 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, far harder than gold at about 2.5 to 3. That hardness is the main reason people choose it.
Scratches vs cracks
Tungsten keeps its polish for years because everyday objects cannot scratch it. The trade-off is that hard materials are brittle: a hard impact on stone or tile, or a strong squeeze, can crack a tungsten band, while gold would bend or dent.
Gold scratches and dulls with daily wear, but a jeweler can polish it back to new and repair dents.
Sizing and repair
Gold can be resized up or down by a jeweler, usually by about one or two sizes, and repaired if damaged. Tungsten cannot be resized or repaired; if your size changes, the band is replaced.
That makes sizing accuracy more important for tungsten. Measure carefully with the ring size guide, and remember that wider bands fit tighter, as covered in the men's band width guide.
Removal in an emergency
A gold ring can be cut off with a standard ring cutter. Tungsten is too hard for that, but emergency staff can crack it off with locking pliers. Either way, removal is possible if a finger swells after an injury.
Weight, value, and price
Tungsten carbide feels heavy, similar to gold. A tungsten band usually costs much less than a gold band of the same width. Gold holds intrinsic metal value and can be passed down or remade; tungsten has little resale value.
Which to choose
Choose tungsten for an inexpensive, scratch-resistant band, especially for hands-on work. Choose gold for a band you may resize, repair, engrave again, or pass down. Compare both in wedding bands and men's rings.
Common questions
- Can a tungsten ring be resized?
- No. Tungsten carbide cannot be resized. If your size changes, the band is replaced.
- Does tungsten scratch?
- Very rarely in everyday use. It is far harder than gold, though it can crack or chip from a hard impact.
- Can tungsten be removed in an emergency?
- Yes. It cannot be cut with a standard ring cutter, but it can be cracked off with locking pliers.
- Is tungsten better than gold?
- Neither is better overall. Tungsten wins on scratch resistance and price; gold wins on resizing, repair, and lasting value.
